BBC Nets Unilever Chief for Top Post

The BBC is poised to appoint Andy Duncan, a senior Unilever foods marketer, to replace Matthew Bannister as director of marketing and communications.

Duncan, 38, has been with Unilever for more than 16 years. He is currently category director, spreads and cooking products, Europe, for Unilever's Foods and Beverages Europe division, based in Rotterdam.

Duncan was also recently UK marketing director for Van den Bergh foods. He is widely credited with turning around Unilever's spreads and cooking brands division, which has achieved significant growth in the past year.

Duncan fought off competition for the BBC role from a shortlist that included former BBC director of corporate marketing Jane Frost. Channel 5 marketing director Jim Hytner was also approached for the job, but turned it down.

The BBC marketing post is widely seen as one of the toughest in the industry. It is the top job in a 400-strong department, and faces the challenge of getting proposals agreed by the BBC's executive committee. …
