Interbrew UK Hands MD Role to Marketing Boss

Interbrew UK has promoted sales and marketing director Stewart Gilliland to the post of managing director.

Gilliland's move follows the departure of Miles Templeman from the brewing giant last week.

Templeman, who was managing director of Whitbread Beer Company when it was bought by Belgian Interbrew nine months ago, resigned last week citing concerns over his autonomy as managing director following months of speculation about his future.

Templeman has ruled out joining a buyout bid for Bass Brewers, which is being sold by Interbrew on the order of trade secretary Stephen Byers, following a Competition Commission inquiry.

Gilliland, who has worked for Interbrew for 16 years, will take up the top post at the end of April. He assumes ultimate responsibility for brands including the UK's biggest-selling premium draught lager brand, Stella Artois.

A spokeswoman for Interbrew said that no decision on a replacement sales and marketing director had been made, and that there were no other changes of personnel.

One potential candidate for the top marketing post could be Richard Evans, brands director for Stella Artois, Boddingtons, Murphy's and Heineken, who had reported to Gilliland. …
