Like everything else in this world, dance grooves obey the laws of gravity, and sooner or later what goes up must come down. The popularity of down-tempo "chill out" CDs proves that just because the DJ has played the last dance, it doesn't mean the party's over. With more and more clubgoers taking the action "back to mine"--a British expression meaning "going home"--and with a CD series bearing the same name, it's no surprise that acts like Grand Tourism are making music that caters to those hours after the "after-hours" clubs have closed.

Grand Tourism comprises studio musicians Chris Canavaggio and Bob Farrel (both gay) and electronic studio whiz Sean Henry. Like their compatriots Air, Daft Punk, and Mirwais, these Frenchmen know a thing or two about sonic texture, and they layer it on dreamy wisps of synthesized musical bliss. Rather than stacking beat upon beat, Grand Tourism prefers to keep the grooves in a relatively smooth glide, letting the melody ease you into an electro-relaxed state. …
