Dear Readers,

Thank God summer vacation is over! Adults now can return to a normal life set to rhythms and cadences of responsibility instead of the whims of kids and topsy-turvy family fun.

What brings this to mind is the return to Washington of our brat-pack lawmakers. Has anybody ever noticed that watching them at work is like watching the preening and posturing of a bunch of school-yard youths?

We wonder whether lawmakers understand that, like parents, they have a job -- a role if you will -- in shaping the priorities of our national family and making certain that not only are rules made but also that they are reviewed periodically to take into account "daily" realities.

Consider the heated rhetoric some (mostly Democrats) are spewing about the lack of money in the federal budget to fund this or that. President George W. Bush's tax cut (one many a key Democrat endorsed) is being blamed. How curious the notion that money collected from hardworking people should not be returned to them if it's not needed. …
