RAWA: Women Standing Up to the Taliban

Guilt by association is a fairly standard judgment in our society, particularly if that association involves cooperation with a criminal. Think of the charge, "harboring a fugitive." Or, in wartime, "giving aid and comfort to the enemy." These days Osama bin Laden is portrayed to us as an infernal demon of larger-than-life proportions, weaving a web of potential domestic terrorism that requires huge sums of tax money and possibly draconian restrictions on our civil liberties to combat. But it appears that our government is content with giving his Taliban hosts nothing more than an economic cold shoulder for providing sanctuary to this international outlaw.

Admittedly, the former Soviet Union left little doubt that conventional military intervention in Afghanistan is not very smart. Still, it seems a little out of character for what is without doubt the most powerful country on the face of the Earth to stand idly by, mocked by bin Laden's freedom to execute nefarious plots. …
