Although this year saw Vernon Reid reuniting and touring with Living Colour, working on a new Masque album, and performing with Jack Bruce, it may be three days in Memphis with James Blood Ulmer that Reid remembers most about 2001.--JG

"Blood has always been an inspiration to me," says Reid, "and it was an honor and a joy to produce him. But even considering his harmolodic, post-Ornette Coleman, avant-garde guitar work, Blood has always been a straight blues singer. So I told him he should do a for-real blues record. Soon, it wasn't just a blues record I wanted to do, but one that was recorded at Sun Studios. The history in that room has a huge weight. It's a very plain room where very extraordinary things happened.

"We recorded everything live, so sound leakage was a problem. [Sun engineer] James Lott and I had to arrange the guitar amps back-to-back in the studio office, and move them around so the bleed wasn't too bad. …
