Public Technology Inc.'s SOLUTIONS Awards Entries Due Oct. 19

Public Technology Inc. (PTI) is currently accepting entries for the 2001 PTI Technology SOLUTIONS Awards, a national competition to showcase examples of technology excellence in the public sector. Entries are due Oct. 19.

"Many daring PTI members regularly provide evidence that with a willingness to change, technology can indeed provide a way to rethink service delivery and strengthen local institutions of economic development and democracy," said PTI President Costis Toregas. "The SOLUTIONS program brings together the finest solutions at the local government level."

Last year's winners and honorable mention recipients featured a variety of solutions outside of the traditional information technology arena. Among small jurisdictions, winner Gaithersburg, Md., offered a knowledge management solution while honorable mention recipients San Carlos, Calif., was recognized for "Visioning Downtown San Carlos" and Santa Monica, Calif., for its Web Information Network (WIN).

In the category for mid-size jurisdictions, Portland, Ore., claimed top honors with its "Powering a Fuel Cell with Anaerobic Digester Gas" entry. Honorable mention awards went to Boston for the Website called "Mayor's Food Court," to Dayton, Ohio, for use of thin client technology and to Hampton, Va., the 1999 winner in this category, for its 311 call center.

Among large jurisdictions, Los Angeles garnered the top award for its Advanced Transit Priority System Project while San Diego's Downtown San Diego Public Impacts Project, San Jose's Public Safety Dispatcher-in-a-Box and Phoenix's Alternate Daily Landfill Cover earned honorable mention awards. …
