Dear Readers,

George W. Bush is now The President. His powerful, direct and passionate address to a joint session of Congress captured the panoply of emotions of all who cherish freedom. We made clear that we are resolute in our national indignation and mean to stamp out terrorism and those who support it. Indeed, it boils down to right and wrong, good and evil, and us versus them.

At the same time, amid the passions of this moment, we should ask whether it is vengeance we want or to assure the security of our beloved homeland. To engage in war is to become a winner or a loser. But who are the enemies we confront in the lands beyond our porous national boundaries -- united only by fanatical hatred of America and the modern world?

These thoughts come to mind as murmurs are heard about what could have been done, what is being done, and what must be done. As we consider this, let us also focus on what must not be done: America cannot make prisoners of her people. To do so physically or psychologically cedes victory to our enemies. …
