Dear Readers,

We've filed this short note from a red bench at the baggage check-in of Baltimore-Washington International Airport. To be honest, there's a certain nervousness here. Susie, a woman just ahead of me in line, is off to Buffalo, N.Y., to watch her hometown football team. She acknowledges trepidations about flying, as do many of the 150 or so other passengers queued up here. A young lady with ornamental studs on her jeans -- a la the late sixties -- is particularly concerned.

What brings such thoughts to mind is the odd sense of security despite the jitters of flying. After all, who is going to bomb or blow up an airport out here in the middle of nowhere? Many of us realize that if trouble comes it probably will be somewhere else. Such sentiment isn't meant to wish ill on others. Lynn, an airline ticket agent, says: "It's just an honest prayer for safety -- one shared at every airport in the country." An airport cop says things are normal despite the extra security. Believe it or not, he says, the night before police here confiscated four guns and a variety of illegal drugs. …
