B&Q, the Kingfisher-owned DIY retailer, is understood to be developing plans to extend its brand into a broad range of home services, including insurance and utilities.

The company, which has a marketing budget of around [pound]36m, is keen to find ways of leveraging the strength of its brand by applying it to relevant products. It has had internal discussions over a number of months on the possibility of linking the B&Q brand to services that are a natural fit.

The firm is also thought to be considering extending its fittings service beyond kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces to a wider range of home improvements, which could include interior design.

AB&Q spokeswoman said: "We are always looking at ways we can extend the brand, and there have been a broad range of discussions internally about ways we can take the ideas forward. Home insurance is obviously one such idea.

"However, these are not short-term initiatives to be launched in the next few months, and we haven't yet got as far as talking to external suppliers. …
