AN APPEAL for $1 million has been issued to help the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. To initiate the "Victims of the Attack on America Campaign," the St. Louis-based society forwarded $125,000 to the New York area. "We know that the society's members, already actively volunteering to help, are not alone in their desire to help ease the pain of thousands of fellow Americans affected in so many ways by this indescribable tragedy," said Eugene B. Smith, national president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

MIKE MANSFIELD, a son of Irish Catholic immigrants, died of congestive heart failure Oct. 5. He was 98. Mansfield, a Montana Democrat, spent 34 years in Congress and was Senate majority leader a record 16 years, 1961-77. He was one of the earliest opponents of the U.S. escalation of the Vietnam War and played a critical role in passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. He said his own proudest political achievement was guiding the passage in 1971 of the 26th Amendment, lowering the voting age to 18.

MARK HANSON was installed as the leader of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Oct. 6. Hanson, 54, will begin his six-year term as the presiding bishop Nov. 1, succeeding the Rev. H. George Anderson who is retiring. With 5.1 million members, the church represents the nation's fifth-largest Protestant denomination. Hanson, who has been bishop of the St. Paul, Minn., Synod, assumes the leadership of a church currently struggling with two divisive issues: the role of homosexual clergy and its related stand on same-sex unions, and small pockets of discontent arising from the church's ecumenical efforts, relationships that some fear may work to dilute Lutheran identity.
