THANKS FOR PAUL BERMAN'S article "Terror and Liberalism" [October 22, 2001]. It was most refreshing to read a historical perspective that takes account of the advances in Western civilization over the last century. Equating Islamic fundamentalism with the barbarisms of Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini does not overstate the case. Berman's twin conclusions--that Islamic fundamentalism must be crushed and that the blessings of liberty must be extended to the regions in its grip--perceptively show the way to true security.

IT MAY FEEL GOOD TO believe Paul Berman that the world is in the throes of a century-long struggle between liberal democracy (us) and totalitarianism (various thems). But it won't help us to prevent the new millennium from being as bloody as the last one.

We've supported whoever seemed likely to help expand our power and influence--Augusto Pinochet, the shah of Iran, the butchers of Guatemala, Ngo Dinh Diem in Vietnam, Mobutu Sese Seko in Congo, even Saddam Hussein and the Afghan Muslim extremists. …
