Dear Readers,

"Let's roll," a confident and practical President George W. Bush told the nation Nov. 8 in a speech to 5,000 or so American heroes. Curiously, not all TV networks carried the live remarks intended for the larger audience that is the world.

What brings this to mind -- still -- are the searing images we wrote about last week after visiting the gap where the World Trade Center once stood. It seems odd that networks are willing to show the ongoing cleanup and the retaliatory strikes in Afghanistan on a daily basis (sometimes in breathless wonder), yet when an opportunity presents itself to help keep matters in perspective (and in context) these executives choose not to air it. Somehow, we think the viewing public can distill what the American president has to say better than the talking heads who always claim to know what he meant to say.

Indeed, as this week's mix of stories shows, peering behind the curtains and shining light into dark places is a more suitable role for the press. …
