AS ONE OF THE WORLD'S REAL "ADVENTURE JOURNALISTS," William T. Vollmann has covered everything From the South Asian child prostitution trade to the hidden lives of San Francisco's homeless to the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan. (He was out of the country during the attacks on the World Trade Center and couldn't be reached for comment.) Vollmann also writes fiction, though, and one of his ongoing projects in that realm is Seven Dreams--a series of historical novels that chronicles the ongoing struggle between indigenous Americans and European interlopers. The latest installment is Argall, a retelling of the romance between John Smith and Pocahontas.
