JEAN SOUFFRANT, 23, a Haitian-American Catholic from the Miami archdiocese, has been named recipient of the 2001 Cardinal Bernardin New Leadership Award. The award, which recognizes young Catholics leaders fighting against poverty and injustice, and given annually by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, was named for the late Chicago cardinal for his strong support of the campaign. Souffrant is the volunteer youth minister for his Miami parish, Notre Dame d'Haiti, and a youth leader for Miami-Dade County's People Acting for Community Together, a coalition of 25 interdenominational Christian churches that address problems among low-income residents.

SUHAIL KHAN, a Muslim-American who worked for former Rep. Tom Campbell, R-Calif., has been hired by the White House as its first staffer assigned specifically to reach out to American Muslims. Khan will work in the Office of Public Liaison, reported "Religion and Ethics NewsWeekly," a PBS television program. Khan will work with other staffers whose duties involve relating to Christians and Jews. The White House has made several overtures to the Muslim community in recent months. President Bush has visited the Washington Islamic Center and reiterated that the military action in Afghanistan is not an assault on Islam.

JESUIT FR. GREG BOYLE is the 2001 recipient of the Dignitas Humana Award from St. John's School of Theology and Seminary in Collegeville, Minn. The award was presented to him in mid-October at the theology school, which is in the St. Cloud diocese. As founder and director of Jobs for a Future. and Homeboy Industries, the Los Angeles priest has been providing a way for youths to leave gangs through job training and job placements. The priest, who is known as "G-Dog," by the youths he works with, described gangs as "places to go when life is in a downward spiral. …
