Dear Readers,

It was, at first, amusing to receive the solicitation to join tens of millions of Americans -- men and women capable of forcing powerful politicians to bend a knee, transportation companies to extend discounts and movie theaters to cut prices. Then it hit us: How did they know we had reached that magical age?

Of course, there's not much we newsmen cannot uncover, dig out or pry loose. And if we can do it, imagine what the government can acquire with all its vastness of power, limited only by the U.S. Constitution. But what of government and bureaucrats when the Constitution is being ignored, as recently occurred with passage of the dangerous USA PATRIOT antiterrorism law? If a pre-Sept. 11 system tolerated misuse of FBI dossiers, how do we protect against wholesale abuse now?

That is the challenge before the American people who elect overseers of law. Which is where the press comes in, like it or not. The press' job is to bell the proverbial cat sneaking around and poking its nose in our business. …
