Dear Readers,

As surely as residents of Littleton, Colo., are shell-shocked by the carnage inflicted by two young men, one cannot but wonder aloud how the mothers and fathers of children in Kosovo feel about the carnage in their war zone where the dead also are stuff of broadcast nightmares.

What brings such geographical comparisons to mind are, put simply, the pictures -- those snapshots of heartbreaking scenes frozen in time. The costs are more than personal for the families. Horrible images affect us all. It is from such a collective agony and sadness that crusades are born and causes take on a life of their own. But at what cost?

For example, with a rash of school shootings in this country as well as in Scotland, calls have been made to tighten controls on guns and disarming the public has become a media cause among well-intentioned people. There already are plenty of laws on the books, of course, so one has to wonder -- yet again -- whether more laws are the answer in a society where individual freedoms are eroded daily in favor of the state. …
