Dear Readers,

Just like the child who pointed out that the emperor had no clothes, the press has a role to carefully observe and point out the "bare" facts.

That is our role. And what brings this to mind is the variety of reports in this week's issue. From J. Michael Waller's cover story on defense to Tony Hays' expose on the House of Saud in Arabia to Kelly Patricia O'Meara's review of U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White's tenure as top legal eagle in the Southern District of New York to Diana Ray's fascinating report on how Muslim women see themselves. In all of this there's much that our society wants to ignore but which needs to be said.

Consider the economy: During the presidential race George W. Bush expressed concern about a looming recession only to be ridiculed by Al Gore, Bill Clinton, many Democrats and a press corp that often failed to do its economic homework. Mitch Daniels, President Bush's director of the Office of Management and Budget, recently told a gathering that the United States will be operating with federal deficits well into 2005 -- and that's if the economy rebounds from a recession now formally acknowledged as having begun long ago. …
