Lynwood, Calif., is this report's perfect example. This is a city that knows a thing or two about cleaning.

Its cleaning program isn't held on a day or for a weekend or even a solid month. Lynwood's program is called Lynwood Shines 2001, as in the whole year. And while the majority of the cleaning is done during a six-month, end-of-year stretch, the message of keeping the city clean year-round is prevalent. A lot of work goes into making Lynwood as clean as it is.

This year's program added a focal point. An expo at the end of September provided training for various types of cleanup and beautification programs, a general assembly program with guest speakers and cleaning trainers and displays setup throughout the event. The idea was to get the community ready for the cleaning months ahead, both intellectually and mentally.

Lynwood Shines breaks the city down into 13 different sections, each of which will be cleaned by the City of Lynwood Environmental Services Department. The cleanup to these areas is comprised of five main programs, each having a number of smaller pieces and many that will use the help of community members:

No Graffiti

The No Graffiti Community Education program was started to help eliminate graffiti and other types of vandalism. Members of this cleanup group will try to significantly reduce the cost of graffiti abatement, reduce graffiti in general in Lynwood, increase community awareness and encourage stronger sanctions for graffiti and other forms of vandalism. …
