Innovative Interfaces, Inc. has announced w development to Web Access Management: the ability to provide verified remote-on access to licensed resources without requiring browser proxy configuration. The company has also announced three separate implementations of its Millennium integrated try system.

Web Access Management

Web Access Management, a component Millennium Access Plus (MAP), is a remote-patron-authentication product that enables library users from anywhere to access Web-based licensed databases. Most remote-patron-authentication products use a proxy to perform this function. By transferring the user ugh a proxy, a valid user gains access to licensed information resources that otherwise would deny access to that user because he or is coming from an unknown IP address. The new Web Access Management enhancement will still use a proxy, but instead of the browser specifying the proxy, the URL it-will redirect the user through it.

"Innovative's Web Access Management, which our library has been using since 1999, allows us to offer remote database access to our distance education students as well as our on-campus faculty and students who often choose to conduct research at their places of residence," said Ruth Helwig, systems librarian at Central Michigan University. "We anticipate that this new development will significantly save staff time by reducing the number of phone calls from users who are unable to properly configure their browsers."

"The biggest advantage of this method is library users do not have to configure a proxy in their browser in order to use licensed library resources. This new method also work better with the many different ISPs and proprietary browsers such as AOL," said Laurie Davidson, Innovative's product manager. "This Web Access Management enhancement is based, in part, on host-name proxy technology licensed from Useful Utilities, the developers of Ezproxy."

MAP is an integrated solution that manages access to information resources, guiding-library patrons and staff to Internet content quickly, while protecting the rights of the library and content providers. MAP includes three independent components: Web Access Management, MetaFind, and WebBridge. …
