Strategic Goal Setting Seminar Focuses on the Future

LTI seminar participants spent the day concentrating on such topics as strategic planning, defining leadership, developing and implementing goals and team building exercises during the Producing Results for Your City - A Practical Model for Strategic Goal Setting seminar at the Congress of Cities in Atlanta.

Trainer Lyle Sumek had attendees focused on both personal and municipal approaches to strategic goal setting and policy planning during the seminar.

Collectively, participants worked on how to identify and cultivate strong leaders within the community along with how to get these leaders involved in the government planning process. Sumek also had attendees think about their own cities successes and how past performance evaluations can benefit the future of the city.

Councilmember Jim Winder of Yorba Linda, Calif., commented. "The seminar far exceeded my expectations. I particularly enjoyed the blend between the lecture and all of the meaningful exercises."

Sumek stressed to participants that the basis behind the "vision of the future" for the city should focus on the unique assets that it can contribute.

These assets will in-turn promote the cities success. A clear vision statement needs to be brief and followed by guiding principles.

Sumek stated that cities should focus on the three things when looking to the future. First are key businesses in the city: What should the core business be? What should the city be known for? …
