* Elementary Art Consultant, grades 1-5 and Art Department Chair, Highmeadow Common Campus, Farmington Hills, Michigan.

* Typical class size: 26 students in each classroom

* Instruction time: Each class meets once a week for 50 minutes of art core curriculum. Students also elect two enrichment courses which meet twice a week for ten weeks throughout the year.

SA: Harvey, as you look back over your years as an elementary art teacher, how would you describe the value and importance of the work you have done?

HG: Since being recognized by state and national awards, I've been fortunate to hear from many former students who wrote to share the impact that I had on their lives. For example, one letter was from a young man who just received a full five-year scholarship to Harvard for his Ph.D. in Art History. I don't need to tell you who planted the seeds! Another was from a senior who just received a $30,000 scholarship to Savannah College of Art. I was so very proud to attend her graduation party. Of course, most students are not embarking on art-related careers, but they thanked me for the appreciation of art that I instilled in them. Once past elementary school, our former students don't always come back to tell us how they are doing or let us know that we did make a difference in their lives. It's been wonderful to have the last 33 years of my professional life validated!

SA: If you had an opportunity to address a school board in a district that did not have elementary art teachers, what major points would you want to make? …
