The quest for knowledge is as important today as it has ever been. Whether that quest is for commerce, curiosity or education, it is only by sharing information that this knowledge becomes of benefit. Thus, the role Geographical has in communicating new discoveries is key, not only to the process of exploration itself, but also in how expeditions are viewed by a new generation of geographers.

There is often a tendency to judge the leadership skills and personal qualities of the explorers, rather than to ask what a particular undertaking will, or has, contributed to a greater understanding of the world in which we live. The thrill of adventure often seems to eclipse the excitement of discovery. Expeditions do not need to be journeys of endurance or involve a near-death experience. Indeed it can be argued that a well-planned expedition should never push its members to the limit. …
