Citizens of Salem Will Rally `Round the Flag. (Washington in Brief)

Responding to an item on the shortage of American flags for ceremonial distribution on Capitol Hill, INSIGHT reader Drenda Sutton says her Arkansas community is ready, willing and able to help. "When I saw the article on Old Glory, I felt that I needed to try to see if this could be a possibility," she writes. Her community, Salem, suffered an economic setback when a major apparel company closed its last domestic factory. Many of the workers had been there since 1968 making shirts for retail and military markets. In some cases, including Sutton's, both husband and wife worked in the factory.

"The people we worked with were loyal, dedicated, experienced people; they are willing to do whatever it takes to get full-time employment," she says. Sutton's idea is that the big wheels on Capitol Hill might figure out how to help set up a flag-making business in Salem. Federal law requires that flags distributed by Congress must be American-made. …
