"After the heartache and pain that is often portrayed in Africa, it is time that the world knew that our continent has many successful things going for it, like Botswana," declared the Botswana High Commissioner to Britain, Roy Blackbeard, when he announced the launch of a new programme to communicate the positive story of Botswana's management of its diamond industry.

Botswana produces 30% of the world's diamonds and is the single largest producer of gem quality diamonds. With a population of 1.5 million people, Botswana is one of Africa's success stories. It has one of the world's most stable democracies, a vibrant economy and a growing infrastructure.

The programme, launched at the end of March, is aimed at reaching key opinion formers in the UK and the USA and aims to tell how Botswana has managed (and is still managing) its diamond industry that accounts for 35% of the country s GDP.

The diamond industry is the mainstay of the economy, contributing to massive development and making the country one of the richest in the world. …
