Handicapping the recruitment-ad race

CareerBuilder Inc. had a shot at being the No. 2 online career site when it bought Headhunter.net in November.

The opportunity may have been short-lived, however. CareerBuilder, owned by Knight Ridder and the Tribune Co., may be kicked back to third place by Yahoo!, which made a $436- million bid last month for HotJobs.com.

On the limited bright side, the deal would keep Monster.com parent TMP Worldwide Inc., HotJob's would-be buyer, from getting bigger -- for now.

CareerBuilder has a contract making it the exclusive provider of job listings to Yahoo!, but analysts expect Yahoo! to find a way out of the contract so it can focus on integrating HotJobs. Some suspect Yahoo! wasn't a huge source of traffic for CareerBuilder.

Longer term, CareerBuilder, its newspaper owners, and other newspapers will face a bigger foe for their highly profitable help-wanted ads. HotJobs and Yahoo! together would boast some 7 million rEsumEs, compared with CareerBuilder's 3 million, and a suite of services to woo major advertisers. …
