When you enter the working world, this is often the first question people will ask you to get a sense of who you are. And you'll hear it more and more as you go on in life. What you do-your profession--really can define who you are. And those who are most excited answering the question are in careers that they love.

You might think the smartest course of action is to pursue the highest paying field (on average) in the country, which, according to Best Jobs for the 21st Century by J. Michael Farr and LaVerne L. Ludden (JIST Works, 2001), is dentist, with earnings of about $110,000 a year. Or you might consider the best job overall in terms of pay, growth, and number of openings. Systems analyst ranks No. 1 in this category. While it's interesting to see which occupations top the charts, ultimately, the professional path you should follow is the one that you find most rewarding. …
