Dear Readers,

Somehow the phrase "they were the best of times and the worst of times" springs to mind when reviewing events since Sept. 11 -- a benchmark in time which we suspect will be used, abused and relied on for many decades.

What brings this to mind are stories in this week's issue that seem to juxtapose the very best and worst in us and, perhaps, provide a glimpse of things to come. Kelly Patricia O'Meara's cover story on Enron, and a companion political notebook column by Senior Editor Jamie Dettmer, lay out the folly of sowing seeds without thought about what may sprout. In the mad dash of the 1990s, during an administration of extreme hubris, Enron established an intricate web of deceit based on greed, side deals, and winks and nods with regulators, service vendors, creditors and politicians eager as any gambling addict in Las Vegas to capitalize on a sure bet.

But, as Martin Edwin Andersen reminds us in a superb article about whistle-blowers, do not forget that there still are Americans willing to stand up to power and expose the wispy threads of waste, fraud and abuse, whether at Enron or elsewhere. …
