You can take a boat to the water, but can you make it float? That depends on two things: whether or not the shore has a launch slipway, or if the Dolly Launch is at hand.

There are only two places in the world where you can see the newly-created Dolly Launch in action. They are flat and sandy beaches at Plettenberg Bay and Bretton on Sea on the South African Garden Route. Both lack conventional slipways, and that means lot of pushing and shoving to get fishing and whale-watching boats into the water - along with the danger of injury by the propeller or being dumped by large waves.

Blaine Dodds, general manager of Robberg Seafoods, decided there had to be a better way. Eventually he discovered it, although it's not for the faint-hearted. Dodds' answer to these down-to-the-sea-in-boats hassles is a specially designed trainer with rollers that literally launches boats into the bay - Cape Kennedy style. …
