Dear Readers,

First of all, many thanks to so many who took time to share personal experiences about no good deeds going unpunished. From your response to the resulting surgery, we've realized another maxim -- friendship never ceases to inspire.

As your editor just learned, there are many balms, anesthetics and unguents -- but in geopolitics none is so common as expediency. In Washington, that is especially true when it comes to avoiding the taint of scandal. It ofttimes doesn't even matter if the charges are true, as in the Enron debacle. Our advice is this: Public disclosure is the best antiseptic.

Consider the energy task force headed by Vice President Dick Cheney. Principles are a good thing, especially after suffering so many years without them. But even when someone is right, as Cheney is, it helps to keep the picture in perspective to identify the higher moral ground. In this case, remember the American public has been trained to suspect White House officials urging in a loud voice that we pay no attention to the wizard behind the curtain. …
