Bush Forms New Corps, Names Faith-Based Head. (News)

Jim Towey, an attorney who has worked on end-of-life issues and served as legal counsel to Mother Teresa, has been named by President Bush as the new director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. Bush praised Towey for working with both Republicans and Democrats as well as the famous nun.

"He understands there are things more important than political parties," the president said in the February 1 announcement. Towey's task will be to work with Congress to pass legislation to enhance governmental aid for faith-based and other community organizations.

The faith-based initiative boosted by President Bush last year got no more than a fleeting mention in his State of the Union address on January 29. Bush chose the nationally televised speech to announce creation of the USA Freedom Corps to augment existing Americorps, Senior Corps and Peace Corps volunteer groups and to initiate a Crisis Corps.

The next day, Bush appointed John Bridgeland as executive director of USA Freedom Corps and chairman of a new Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. That advisory council involves five cabinet secretaries and the chairman for the Corporation of National and Community Service. …
