Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Mel Martinez has joined the line up for the upcoming Congressional City Conference in Washington, D.C.

The conference gets underway on Friday, March 7, with Leadership Training Institute Seminars and concludes on Tuesday, March 12, with meetings on Capitol Hill to share the six advocacy priorities developed earlier this year by the NLC leadership team.

Before coming to Washington in January 2001, Martinez was the elected chairman of Orange County, Fla., in Orlando and served on the Governor's Growth Management Study Commission. He has continued his interest in growth management by taking a leadership role in the national dialogue on growth issues.

Since being confirmed as the nation's 12th housing secretary last year, Martinez has focused on increasing minority homeownership, ensuring affordable rental housing opportunities, protecting vulnerable Americans, including combating predatory lending practices, and supporting terrorism recovery efforts.

A native of Cuba, he was one of 14,000 children who came to American in 1962 as part of a Catholic Humanitarian effort called Operation Pedro Pan. Speaking virtually no English, he lived in two youth facilities and later with foster families before being reunited with his family in Orlando in 1966.

Martinez joins an impressive line up of speakers who will address the 3,000 delegates who will arrive in Washington later this week. …
