INTERNATIONAL

Robert Thomson, 40, New York-based managing editor for the Financial Times' U.S. edition, has been named editor of The Times of London. He succeeds Peter Stothard, who resigned last month. A native of Australia, Thomson's career now spans four continents, beginning in 1979 at The Herald (now the Herald Sun) in Melbourne. After a stint at The Sydney Morning Herald, he joined the Financial Times, working in Beijing and Tokyo before moving to New York.
