Article excerpt

South Georgia, a Southern Ocean Island off the Falklands, has no permanent human inhabitants and can only be visited by ship. It's partly because of its towering 11,000-kilometre mountains and immense glaciers, and partly because of its teeming wildlife, that this is a place regularly pitched among the most awe-inspiring destinations on Earth. Its sheer remoteness and inaccessibility only add to its air of mystery and unpredictability.

To visit Antarctica is to visit not just another continent but another world -- a world where the wildlife is supremely adapted to survival in harsh surroundings and where humanity is practically alien. There are literally hundreds of thousands of king and macaroni penguins on the island, huddled together in one seemingly vast colony. You'll also find crowds of wandering, black-browed, grey-headed and light-mantled sooty albatrosses, gentoo penguins, southern elephant seals and Antarctic fur seals. Secure in their seldom-visited and unsullied wilderness, the creatures here remain astonishingly tame.
