Thanks to an anonymous 25,000-tree pledge, contributions to AMERICAN FORESTS' Global Releaf Sarajevo tree-planting campaign will be doubled, tree-for-tree through October 1. AMERICAN FORESTS' goal is to double the pledge so that 50,000 trees can be planted on 10 slopes currently being readied for autumn planting.

The 1984 giant slalom Olympic gold medalist, Debbie Armstong, is serving as spokesperson for Global ReLeaf Sarajevo. She will return to the city where she earned her gold medal this fall to help plant the first of 50,000 trees in October. The Global ReLeaf campaign aims to plant 300,000 hillside trees and 3,000 street trees to reforest denuded slopes in and around the city.

While receiving an award at the Far West Ski Council conference in Reno, Nevada, this spring, Armstrong encouraged Council members to support Global ReLeaf Sarajevo.

"I want to give something back to the people and the city who were so wonderful to me," said Armstrong. "But to avoid an environmental crisis we must act quickly, so we are beginning with those I know best: the ski community."

At the end of the speech, ski clubs from San Diego, Modesto, San Francisco, and Sacramento presented Armstrong with several hundred dollars in impromptu contributions. …
