Webster Financial Corp. in Waterbury, Conn., has promoted its assistant controller, Gregory S. Madar, to controller.

Mr. Madar, a Webster senior vice president, joined the holding company for Webster Bank in 1995 as a vice president and a tax manager. Before that he had been the controller of Millane Nurseries Inc. in Cromwell. Still earlier he had been a tax manager in Hartford at KPMG Peat Marwick LLP.


Excel Bank Minnesota in Edina has hired Jeanne Crain to fill the newly created position of managing director of Richfield operations.

Ms. Crain was the president and chief executive officer for four years of Marquette Capital Bank in Minneapolis. Before that she had been a senior vice president and a private banking manager for five years at the bank, which she helped create in 1993.

Still earlier she had been a vice president of private banking at Bank One in Milwaukee. She has 20 years of private and commercial banking experience.

The $267 million-asset subsidiary of Excel Bank Corp. also hired four other Marquette Capital executives -- David Orlady, Ryan McKinney, Sara Ausman, and Michele Lindell -- to fill newly created jobs.

Mr. Orlady was hired as the senior vice president of business banking. He was the vice president of corporate banking for five years at Marquette Capital. Before that he had been a vice president of business banking at the old U.S. Bancorp, which Firstar Corp. acquired last year.

Mr. McKinney was named the vice president of business banking. He was a vice president at Marquette Capital, which he joined in 1994 as a credit analyst.

Ms. Ausman was hired as the vice president of private banking. She held the same job based in Edina at Marquette Capital, which she joined in 1994 as a private banking assistant.

Ms. Lindell was hired as an assistant vice president and a business banking analyst. …
