Canada's environmental performance is among the worst of any industrialized country in the world, according to a recent report by the Eco-Research Chair of Environmental Law and Policy at the University of Victoria.

"Canada vs The OECD: An Environmental Comparison" ranks Canada 28th out of 29 industrialized countries on its environmental record, outdone only by the United States. The report, published last April, compares the environmental performance of Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) nations by ranking them on 25 environmental indicators.

"This report paints an abysmal picture," says Anne Mitchell, executive director of the Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy. "Hopefully it will be a wake-up call for Canadians and encourage some further proposals and action before [the World Summit on Sustainable Development]," which will take place in Johannesburg this summer.

Canada isn't in the top three for any of the indicators examined. However, it ranks among the bottom three countries on nine indicators, including per capita greenhouse gas emissions, sulphur dioxide emissions, carbon monoxide emissions, volatile organic compound emissions, water consumption, energy consumption, energy efficiency, volume of timber logged and generation of nuclear waste.

Over the past 20 years, Canada's performance on most environmental indicators has worsened, says the report. Examples include an increase in water and energy consumption, increases in nuclear and hazardous waste, higher greenhouse gas emissions and commercial fertilizer use, higher numbers of endangered species, declining fish populations, and a greater number of livestock and motor vehicles. …
