Here's a welcome, if rare, milestone: a complete recording of a Canadian opera, produced in Canada with Canadian forces. Forgive the rank chauvinism, but, notwithstanding the prominence of Canadian artists on world stages and international record labels, our record of making a permanent record of our own operatic legacy is scarcely audible. Economics is the chief culprit, of course, as it is in the concomitant problem that new works, once premiered, tend to fade into often-undeserved obscurity. This issue of the fifth of Harry Somers' six operas was only made possible by the dedication of relatives, friends and colleagues of the composer. Shortly after his death in 1999, they launched the Somers Recording Project The result is "A Window on Somers," a series of (to date) seven CD issues that preserve the diverse aspects of his art. This is the only opera in the series, though a number of CDs feature vocal music.

This performance of Serinette was taped shortly after the same artists mounted semi-staged performances by Soundstreams Canada in St James Cathedral in Toronto. …
