This is your last chance to enter the Geographical Photographer of the Year 2002 competition. The coveted title will be awarded to the most captivating cover image that encapsulates the spirit of Geographical.

What we will be looking for

The judges will be looking for a striking and interesting photograph that relates to the broad variety of issues covered in Geographical, and which could be featured on the front cover of the magazine.

Competition guidelines

* In order to qualify as a cover image, the photograph must present an unusual slant on a subject

* The image should be arresting, with strong visual impact, and should be pin sharp

* Colours should be rich; black and white images should have strong contrast

* Landscapes must have a good depth of field

* The image should be relatively `clean'; it should not have too much fussy detail

* Remember, the photograph should be able to support the Geographical logo at the top, as well as lines of text detailing the magazine's contents

Prize

The prize includes a tailor-made 16-day safari for two in South Africa with fantastic photographic opportunities, courtesy of Classic Retreats, and a Hasselblad XPan Camera with 45mm lens, worth over 1,600 [pounds sterling]. Three runners-up will each receive a Gitzo Mountaineer Carbon Fibre Tripod worth 290 [pounds sterling].

Competition rules

* The competition is open to anyone 18 years or over, except employees of Geographical magazine and their families.

* Entries will only be accepted as prints. They can be colour or black and white prints. Prints must be at least A4 in size, and must have been taken within the last two years prior to the closing date.

* Please do not send transparencies.

* The photographer must be the sole author and owner of the copyright of all entries.

* Please ensure that all prints are clearly labelled on the reverse with the photographer's name and address. Each print must be placed in a separate, unsealed envelope that is clearly marked with the following details: photographer's name and address, caption if appropriate, a description of where and when the picture was taken, and why the photograph would make a successful cover image. …
