The consensus-from the factory floor to Mahagony Row to Friday night meetings at the Sierra Club-is that corporate America must install more safeguards to protect the environment. But how? One possible answer comes from the Boston-based Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES), in the form of the Valdez Principles. (Yes, they are named after Exxon's infamous accident last year.)

The purpose of the principles is to "establish a standard of environmental accountability for corporations," says Gordon Davidson, executive director of CERES and one of the Valdez Principles authors. Davidson adds that CERES will ask signatories "to make a report every year on environmental impact and policies," and that CERES will establish some form of independent verification to ensure compliance. The Valdez Principles include:

Protection of the Biosphere: We will minimize and strive to eliminate the release of any pollutant that may cause environmental damage to the air, water or earth or its inhabitants.

Sustainable Use of natural Resources: We will make sustainable use of renewable natural resources, such as water, soils and forests.

Reduction and Disposal of Waste: We will minimize the creation of waste, especially hazardous waste, and wherever possible recycle materials.

Wise Use of energy.- We will make every effort to use environmentally safe and sustainable energy sources to meet our needs.

Risk Reduction: We will minimize the environmental, health and safety risks to our employees and the communities in which we operate by employing safe technologies and operating procedures and by being constantly prepared for emergencies.

Marketing of Safe Products and Services: We will sell products or services that minimize adverse environmental impacts and that are safe as consumers commonly use them. …
