FR. JIM KELLEY, pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Dillingham, Alaska, died March 23 when the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed in inclement weather. Kelley, a retired Navy chaplain, had been a pilot for more than 40 years. The 73-year-old priest was on his way to celebrate Palm Sunday Masses in villages along Bristol Bay when his Piper Cherokee 140 crashed into Tuklung Mountain about 30 miles west of Dillingham. The cause of the accident has not been determined, but parishioners in Dillingham said it had been foggy and blowing snow when he departed.

A RESEARCH STUDY by the Washington-based Center for Media and Public Affairs has found that between 1999 and 2001 the amount of sex on television has decreased by 29 percent and the amount of serious violence has fallen by 17 percent. The executive summary for the study by the media research think tank was released March 21. It concluded, "Popular culture is not necessarily on a permanent and steeply downward slide.... Rather than continuing to subscribe to the philosophy that `nothing succeeds like excess,' Hollywood is providing viewers with less extreme programming that appeals to wider audiences."

ROBERT W. MUENCH was installed as fifth bishop of Baton Rouge, La., March 14 at the diocese's St. Joseph Cathedral. The 59-year-old New Orleans native previously led the Covington, Ky., diocese. He replaces Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes, who had headed Baton Rouge from September 1993 to February 2001, when he was named coadjutor for New Orleans. …
