The British army recently announced that it will allow unmarried soldiers to bring their girlfriends back to the barracks overnight. "We want to be more flexible in the way people live their lives," Gen. Sir Michael Walker (euphemistically) told a reporter from Reuters before adding, realistically, that "Visitors should become the norm rather than the rarity."

Walker hopes the nightly stays will keep more lads on army rolls. He may be right, but it's certainly a big change in policy for Britain's 50,000 bachelor soldiers, and it won't be the same army as before. It was one of those wire stories that seemed to say a lot about social trends these days, as did another recent Reuters dispatch, this one from Germany. It reported that the small town of Vechta, not far from Hamburg, has learned that allowing men and women workers to take naps during the day increases their efficiency at work and makes them happier human beings.

Now, for the people knows that Germans sleep just like everyone else. …
