Dear Readers,

There have been strong disagreements among friends lately about war in Israel and who is to blame. Images of U.S.-made tanks, helicopter gunships, jets and small arms amid the carnage of civilians on both sides is as appalling as the debris from suicide bombers and their allies carrying Kalashnikov assault rifles. What's next, an exchange of weapons of mass destruction?

What brings this to mind is the so-called mixed message by President George W. Bush that has been so highly touted by the press. Indeed, the White House does give one response, the State Department another and the Defense Department yet another. But in reading (and listening) to several weeks of U.S. responses, those who pay close attention actually receive a fairly consistent message from each of the three. In reality, as a friend said, this suggests a steadier hand behind the scenes than realized. Prudent leaders in Washington considered every option before spouting off on what is a tangled mess filled with hatred and politics and innocents and survivors. …
