The Jewish lobby in the US may be strong, but even George W Bush can't ignore that public opinion is turning against Israel - hardly surprising given the state's complete disregard for the rights of the Palestinians. The final straw was probably not the murder of hundreds of innocent civilians, but the footage broadcast around the world of Israeli troops firing live rounds at peaceful protesters. As if that weren't enough, the soldiers then turned their guns on the BBC. Israel's response to all this has been to keep journalists out completely.

Bush was finally forced to come down hard on Ariel Sharon, first telling him to withdraw his troops and then telling him he really meant it. Oh yes? Who does he think he's kidding? Israel depends on US aid, so if Bush really meant it, he would threaten to remove that aid. Instead, he sends the secretary of state, Colin Powell, to the Middle East on a peace mission. …
