Florida

A Miami-Dade Community College student was chosen to serve on the Florida Youth Council.

Linda Gaines, a student at the Kendall Campus who wants to become a nurse, was selected because of her strong commitment to community service, which has included tutoring underprivileged elementary school students in an after-school program. The Florida Youth Council was established by the Florida Commission on Community Service to promote volunteerism and civic engagement among young people in Florida.

Kentucky

A new partnership between the Cabinet for Workforce Development's Department for Technical Education and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) allows technical education students to enroll simultaneously in both high school and community and technical colleges.

Kentucky Governor Paul Patton announced the establishment of the partnership on February 11. The 16 districts of KCTCS include 28 community and technical colleges encompassing 50 campuses.

Missouri

Statewide results of the 2001 Missouri Assessment Program show that the state's public school students have made gains in several key areas.

The most positive results were in math and science scores among tenth graders and significant reductions in the number of students scoring at the lowest levels in every category. This year marked the first time Missouri students in grades five and nine were required to be tested in the areas of health and physical education.

Ohio

Bill Stanforth, an instructor at the Great Oaks Institute of Technology and Career Development, was invited to participate on Governor Taft's State Teacher Advisory Board.

Stanforth, an animal science and management instructor at the Live Oaks campus, is the only career and technical educator among the 20 teachers on the board. Oklahoma
