Dear Members:

It is our pleasure to submit to you a draft revision of the American Correctional Association's Vision Statement, Mission and Goals. We are presenting it to you for your input and comments prior to final ratification by the Association's leadership in August during the 132nd Congress of Correction in Anaheim, Calif.

The Task Force members reviewed the draft statement and ACA's Constitution and Bylaws to determine which sections of the Constitution and Bylaws were applicable to the Vision Statement. The members determined that the following sections were applicable:

* Encourage enrollment of affiliates

* Establish corporate mission and promulgate policy

* Develop standards and implement accreditation

* Promote correctional workers' and victims' safety; safeguard rights of everybody

* Publish journals and stimulate research

* Sponsor conferences, seminars and meetings

* Form coalitions

* Provide information programs for legislators

* Promote recognition of corrections as a profession

* Ensure representation of minorities, women and other protected classes in corrections

* Promote correctional ethics

* Stimulate higher education/continuing education and university involvement

After review of the Constitution and Bylaws, the Vision Statement Task Force drafted the following Vision Statement, Mission and Goals:

Vision Statement

The American Correctional Association will shape the future of corrections through strong leadership that will bring together various voices and forge coalitions and partnerships to promote the concepts embodied in its Declaration of Principles.

Mission

The American Correctional Association provides a professional organization for all individuals and groups, both public and private, that hold a common goal of improving the justice system. …
