Dear Readers,

"This music crept by me upon the waters, allaying both their fury and my passion with its sweet air."

That is from Shakespeare's The Tempest. What brings it to mind is not only John Berlau's cover story on Diana Krall, a talented songstress admired by young and old. Rather, it is something gleaned from Krall's selection of music that is a good reminder of how we have been touched by recent events. Have you ever found yourself in a fury and suddenly realized you had calmed down after a few minutes of listening to music? And how many times has music of your youth resonated as more honest and true than the current stuff?

As consumers of news, we need at times to step back and see (or hear) current events in the context of time. To remember something, perhaps from long ago, that can help put whatever is going on now into perspective. The story on Krall isn't just about her music. It's about tapping into the past for things as relevant today as they were 75 years ago. …
