ANYONE RESEARCHING ALMOST any aspect of nineteenth-century history will be grateful to have access to The 19th Century Short Title Catalogue (NSTC). The fruit of twenty years' labour by Avero Publications, the Catalogue project, detailing 1,500,000 records, is now nearing completion. Previously available only to libraries and institutions, and then costing a sobering 14,000 [pounds sterling], the material -- on two CD-ROMs -- is now on sale to individuals for a realistic, affordable sum.

The first of the CDs, NSTC Series I & II contains more than 666,000 records for the period 1801 to 1870. Included are the holdings of the British Library, the Bodleian, Cambridge University Library, Trinity College Dublin, the National Library of Scotland, Harvard University Library and the Library of Congress. Each work can be searched by subject, author, title, place, date and keyword.

The second CD-Rom, NSTC Series III, covers the period 1871 to 1919. Having been designed specifically for CD-Rom publication, this later disc has additional search indexes enabling more sophisticated search routes, for example, by series title, printer/publisher, language or country of publication. …
