Girls Take to the Web

A recent study commissioned by the Girl Scouts of America found what many teachers and parents already know: the Internet has become an integral part of teenage gifts' communication patterns. Of the girls surveyed, 67 percent go online two to three times a day, mostly to socialize with friends, and 32 percent log on a few times a week. As for what they talk about, 52 percent of girls who chat online every day reported they prefer to express their emotions online rather than face-to-face, and 54 percent favor using e-mail to fight with friends instead of in-person confrontations.

From Tragedy Comes a New Wave of Teachers

It's no secret that teacher shortages threaten our schools, but school officials report a significant rise in the number of post-September 11 applicants to teacher training and certification programs, many of which send new teachers to urban schools in low-income areas. Teach for America alone received three times as many applications by its October 31 deadline than the previous year. More than half of recent applicants said that they had changed their career plans as a result of September 11. …
