Dear Readers,

News reporting requires craftsmanship as fine as it takes to produce soft textures and brightly colored patterns to show the nap or grain of kid leather. It's also about passion and compelling storytelling.

What brings this to mind is the mix of articles here this week to stimulate provocative thinking and the urge to learn more. One need not like what's reported, but it's important to have the facts. It's also important to have opinion to help put news into context and liven the debate.

For example, Kelly Patricia O'Meara's story on a recent Supreme Court decision reviews what the case is about -- "virtual" child porn and the First Amendment. But look at the last word on p. 48 to get an opinion about what has been overlooked in that debate: If a nation cannot protect its children, then who is safe?

Indeed, accountability is the theme of the week. The cover story by Sheila R. Cherry reviews allegations of conflicts of interest by Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christine Whitman, and John Berlau's investigative report looks at former Securities and Exchange Commissioner Arthur Levitt. …
